Do I have to use special skateboard hardware?

I'm getting a new setup and I need some advice. Since my last setup was complete, I'm a bit confused about hardware. Do I have to use the special skateboard hardware(e.g Shorty's bolts), or is it possible for me to use normal nuts and bolts that I but at Ace Hardware or other shops?
